Jim Cullum Jazz Band Home Page
Jim Cullum Jazz BandOn this very enjoyable Stomp Off CD, the Jim Cullum Jazz band performs 14 Jelly Roll Morton compositions plus one song ("The Chant") associated with the innovative pianist-composer-bandleader. Cullum, a hot cornetist with a frequently exciting style, is heard in top form jamming through the classic numbers with his regular septet, a group also starring clarinetist Allan Vache, trombonist Mike Pittsley and pianist John Sheridan. Highlights of the release (which is a good place to begin exploring Cullum's playing) include "Kansas City Stomp," "The Pearls," "Black Bottom Stomp" and "Tank Town Bump." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This is the first Jim Cullum Band CD I bought at The Landing (and had autographed!). It is wonderful music, track after track. To me, this is early Dixieland, and I love it because I grew up listening to the ragtime my Dad liked. It is a thorough education in the greatness of Jelly Roll Morton and his music.
