Duke Heitger has this to say about this recording made by his New Orleans Wanderers with Bob Havens: This CD was recorded prior to Hurricane Katrina, and like just about everything else after this American tragedy, its release was delayed because of it. On August 25, 2005, life changed for everybody living in New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast. We were all unable to return to our homes for months on end and, uncertain of the city's fate, we began to look at our much loved city not knowing if we would ever be able to return. When considering a song title for the CD, one track seemed especially poignant at this time. "What Is This Thing Called Love?" by Cole Porter. Like many things in life, you don't realize how much you love something until you are faced with losing it. This CD features friends of mine, and it is my first recording with the legendary trombonist Bob Havens. You may recognize him from his 22 year tenure with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. At the time of this session he was 75 years old, and as you can hear, his playing was as strong and as thoughtful as ever. What an inspiration! Similarly, I had never recorded before with the young drummer Mike Waskiewicz, who is currently with Jim Cullum's Jazz Band in San Antonio. The other musicians, Evan Christopher, Steve Pistorius, and Kerry Lewis, are three of my favorites. I have collaborated with each of them on many CDs and it was a great thrill to make this recording with them. I really think there are some extraordinary moments thanks to their brilliant work. In collaborating with exceptional musicians who share a special bond with the city of New Orleans, I feel that the timing of this CD release contributes to a kind of rebuilding effort. Although New Orleans will never be exactly the same, my hope is that it will recover and once again people from all over the world will make the trip to the birthplace of jazz. Today, in spite of the devastation that surrounds us still, New Orleans is full of courage and optimism, and there is a desire that the city and its inhabitants will come through, for what does not kill us makes us stronger; a new begining, if you will, and one that is metaphorically represented in the beautiful painting by Neil Unterseher on the cover.
