| Barbara Rosene |
Barbara Rosene is a passionate interpreter of American popular music of the 20s and 30s. John Postgate of the English publication Jazz Journal has written, "her flapper-like vivacity, her timing, her full voice, even the operatic nuances in her vibrato, are impeccably in period." Barbara began her vocal career in Cleveland, Ohio, performing with a dance orchestra. Her passion for 20s and 30s music led her to more fertile territory. She auditioned over the phone for New York''s vintage bandleader, Vince Giordano. His band, The Nighthawks, recreate the hot jazz and dance music of Barbara''s favorite era. For several years she was Giordano''s featured vocalist at traditional music spots such as The Red Blazer Too and The Cajun Restaurant. Society engagements at The Plaza, The Waldorf Astoria and Rainbow Room followed. Barbara''s first CD on Stomp Off Records, "Deep Night," is a tribute to the female vocalists of the Jazz Age such as Ruth Etting and Annette Hanshaw, and features her old friends in the Nighthawk Orchestra. Will Friedwald, author of Jazz Singing has said, "No one evokes more vividly the music of the great singers of the 20s than Barbara Rosene." Barbara has received glowing reviews in the traditional jazz publication The Mississippi Rag, in Dance USA, and on The All Music Guide online. Barbara has performed at Arci''s Place in New York and various jazz clubs around the city including: La Belle Epoque, Cafe Tacci and Terra Blues. She performs outside of New York at jazz festivals and concerts. Currently Barbara has her own duo affectionately called "Babs and Her Buddies" featuring the wonderful pianist Tom Roberts (who is a master of early jazz piano styles) and up-and-coming clarinetist Pete Martinez (who plays New Orleans-style clarinet and ukulele). Recently, Barbara has been expanding her musical style and can be found on some Monday nights sitting in with the legendary guitarist Les Paul at The Iridium in New York City. Barbara''s vocals can be heard on an Arbors Records release entitled, "Celebrating Bix!," a tribute to the legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Barbara has just released a second CD on Stomp Off Records entilted "Moon Song", which includes more lyrical and undiscovered tunes from the 1920s and 30s. |
