Bob Snyder
Born in Danville, Indiana, the son of professional musicians, Bob Snyder played his first professional engagement at the age of eight. He started playing alto sax in the high school band while in the third grade. At the age of ten he was part of a family group called "The Hillbilly Kids" which appeared across central Indiana. At eleven years of age he was playing clarinet with the Hoosier Symphony at Canterbury College in Danville. He appeared on the Horace Heidt Amateur Hour in Terre Haute at the age of thirteen, and became a featured performer with the Indiana State Legion Band in Indianapolis. Bob won first place awards in the All State Indiana Music Contest all four years of high school. Entering Butler University for a semester, he then went on active duty in the Marine Corps. An opportunity to audition for the Air Force band in Washington DC led to him becoming a member of the Airmen of Note and the original Air Force VIP Band. After eight years of active duty and a final stint in the original Air Force Academy Band, Bob left the service and embarked on his civilian career as a band leader and sideman with groups including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Ted Weems Orchestra. Bob became a member of the Memphis Horns at Stax Records as a studio musician. In 1966 he moved to Detroit, Michigan as a member of the Motown Recording Orchestra and a staff member of the WJR Radio Band. In 1971 Bob played a benefit in Cleveland, Ohio where Lionel Hampton was also performing. Lionel invited Bob to join him on a tour of Europe, which included the Iron Curtain countries. Bob accepted the invitation and continued to appear with Lionel Hampton until the 90''s. In 1984 Bob found a new position as Music Director of the Grand Hotel, a summer resort on Mackinac Island, Michigan. He retired from that position in 1999-2004 and currently travels around the country doing concerts. Bob and his wife Jan own a home on Marco Island, Florida, where he performs at The Deck Restaurant during season. Bob has a hit recording of "Amazing Grace" on the Saxy Records Inc. label and many of his concerts are performed in churches around the country.
