Artist of the Month

Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band  - Lu Watters was one of the leading New Orleans revivalists of the 1940s. Watters was a die-hard fan of King Oliver's Original Creole Jazz Band (which included a young Louis Armstrong); his Yerba Buena Jazz Band featured the two-trumpet lineup made famous by Oliver. Watters and the other white revivalists believed in the primacy of early jazz -- specifically, the music made in New Orleans by black musicians during the '10s and '20s -- eschewing subsequent stylistic developments like swing and bop. The Yerba Buena Jazz Band was founded in 1939 and Watters drew its members from a large swing group he led in Oakland, CA. His intent was to resuscitate the Oliver style, which he did with a great deal of success... more...

In the Afterglow -Travel back to the days when Olive & Boyle was a state of mind and Gaslight Square was the hippest place to be in America.  The tornado that swept through in 1959 destroyed much of the district but in its wake rose a spirit that hasn’t been matched anywhere since.  Gaslight Square became the center of culture for many St. Lousians and musicians.  Some of these local favorites became national stars on the world stage because of the spotlight that Gaslight Square emitted.

We have teamed up with several independent labels to begin offering MP3 downloads to our customers. In the next few months we will be releasing several out-of-print rare Stomp Off Records releases as MP3 downloads for a terrific price of $.99 per song or $9.95 per complete album. These will feature the near-CD quality 192 kbps MP3 files that will allow listeners to hear again some marvelous music that has become unavailale for many years. We plan on beginning with these terrific releases but will expand in the years ahead to include other rare recordings from labels you know and love.
